If you don't hear that sound then the problem most likely has to do with the fuel pump. You already appear to know what the next steps are to take if you don't hear the pump run.

Unknown member. #3 · Jan 7, 2015. Hooking the battery up backwards will blow fuses. The 100 amp fusible link is also likely blown out. Do a visual check in the fuse/relay box with a flashlight. The blown fusible link will be easy to spot. Other fuses need to be removed and checked one at a time or use a multi-meter.
After three hours of dis-assembling and re-assembling the front end of the car again, we were able to repair the wire. Now it starts like a champ". May be worth a look. Besides that double check that either the 120 amp or 140 amp alternator fuse (depending on if you have a tow package or not) is not blown.
