Duramax broken crank.
The duramax engine has a long history of breaking cranks at that location. This is so much of a common issue that people have created cam shafts with altered firing orders to try to remove the stress from that point on the crank. Plenty of stock trucks have broken cranks like this.

When it goes into reduced engine, the ECM turns off the injector on the cylinder that is knocking, and it goes away. Nov 28, 2014 · I've got 3 LB7/LLY broken cranks here. They all do it, but the LB7/LLY cranks have a little more weight to them so they are preferred if you're building the motor. Not sure if it makes a difference which crank you have, I did go with a used LLY crank that was mag tested in my LMM though.
