I don't think you can lock yourself out of areas. Some things have to be unlocked in order, but then the parrots aren't there yet. For me, high priority is anything opening access (farm house, parrot express, resort, warp obelisk, bridge to the bone quarry) and low priority are the shop, shortcut out of the volcano, bridge across the lava.I probably forgot some now.
