I'm pretty sure the red wire is always hot, so you do not need to have the key on. To jump it, you need to get 12V to wherever the start signal wire attaches to the solenoid. It's purple on my tractor, but I am not sure about the 318. This is usually very easily done with a screw driver between the red wire and the start signal wire.

It started right up, ran for 15 minutes and quit. No spark to the plugs! Following the service manual tests, the coil must be bad.Mount the points and rotate the crankshaft using a wrench on the front bolt that holds the pto pulley in place. Set the maximum gap to 0.020". The points surfaces may need to be cleaned (begin by pulling a piece of paper grocery bag between the points).
