I have replaced it with the NDZ 1911 take down tool and it will help eliminate the chance of an "idiot scratch"... I purchased two different sizes..The extractor is held in place by the firing pin stop, so the firing pin stop and firing pin and spring must be removed first. 1. Unload the gun and lock the slide to the rear. 2. Field Strip the gun: Remove the slide from the frame. Remove the guide rod, recoil spring assembly and barrel from the slide.Brake cleaners certainly do the job -- sometimes too well, considering the parts are absolutely denuded of oils and lubricants. My 2¢ tips on Brakleen™: -Use only chlorine-free brake cleaners. At one time I thought Kimber was the top of the food chain, I really did have pride of ownership with them!remanaz. To remove the thumb safety from the gun either use your thumb/fingers to pull the hammer back to the cocked position or rack the slide for the same result. Then push the thumb safety up to roughly the middle of between engaged and off. Once in the middle position wiggle it while pulling it away from the frame.
