I just got the basic 80-90W gear oil, about 5 quarts. (just for rear to start with). I dont want to mess with it until I know I have the right stuff.The Dana 60 spec is just under 3 quarts. In my personal experience, the Dana 50 will take about 2.5 - 2.75 quarts to fill to the plug. As far as I know, the D50 and D60 use the same case, so they SHOULD have the same capacity. I use synthetic 90 weight gear oil it is lighter than 50 weight motor oil and gives the protection of 90 weight. It is uneffected by water if you should go so deep. It also makes shifting the transfer case slightly easier.

I just changed my gear oil in the front and the fluid capacities I've seen posted says 4 pints (2 quarts), but that much won't fit in. At about a 1.3 qts it starts flowing out the fill hole. Make sure the GL-5 gear lube you use is a conventional, not a synthetic. Your new gears need to be kept cool and they'll run cooler when lubricated with a conventional gear lube. The exact viscosity is not critical. 75W-90, 80w-90, etc. is fine.
