The 39-2 was produced between 1971-1982 and, according to the Supica/Nahas catalog, the last 39-2, serial number A747148, was shipped. from the factory on 15 Feb 1983. The Appendices B, Section 3 shows 39 serial numbers A655001- A745000 were made in 1981.

Between it and the model 60 (Stainless version of the M-36) it's possibly the 2nd/3rd most produced handguns. The S&W model 10 is the most produced model ever.

When I open the cylinder, where I'd expect to see the model and serial number (at least on a new smith) - I only see 627-pc, no serial number. The left side of the barrel says Performance Center. The right side of the barrel says .357 Mag-8 Times. On some models they would also put the serial number on the frame, cylinder, and sometimes on the grips, but varied by model.
