A 383 has a 400 crank as you know. A 421 needs a stroker crank which costs money. As per Lingenfelters SBC book "why build a 383 when you can build a 406" (,030 over 400) for the same money and get 23+ cu. in. As far as overheating built right with sensible stuff they run great.

The heads are where you make the power. But if you have the resources I would build the 383 you all ready have the block. jerry.Consider Part Changes to Lower Static Compression Ratio. Another alternative if you still want to run a blower on your 383 c.id. engine, would be to change parts to lower the static compression ratio. You should be able to run a 7-8 psi blower with a 9:1 static compression ratio and the engine might run fine on 91 octane fuel.A smooth idle 454 & a radical high rpm 383 can theoretically make the same power, but the 454 will drive like a stocker. As for looks, the amount of attention a big block Camaro gets is amazing. I see this at local shows quite often.
